Dan receives his first major opera commission to create ANDY: A POPera, a collaboration with Opera Philadelphia and experimental theater group The Bearded Ladies that blends pop and classical elements in exploiring the life and work of pop artist Andy Warhol.
Dan has joined Chicago's Fifth House Ensemble as Director of Artistic Programming! Dan will collaborate with other 5HE artists in creating new compositions, arrangements, and educational workshops.
Dan has been appointed Young American Composer-in-Residence at the California Symphony from 2014-2017 as well as Composer-in-Residence at the Arkansas Symphony for the 2015-16 season.
Dan has been awarded the 2013 Samuel Barber Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and spends the 2013/14 season composing in the Eternal City. Dan's music will receive performances in Rome by Nuova Consonanza and the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Dan is working on a new conerto for Grammy-winning Silk Road Ensemble percussionist Shane Shanahan, a collaboration with Refugee Services Collaborative and CityMusic Cleveland for premiere in March, 2014. The new work, Roots to Branches, weaves together the stories of how refugee families first came to America and features percussion styles from a kaleidoscope of vibrant global cultures.
Dan has been appointed Composer-in-Residence of Chicago's Music in the Loft series beginning this current season. The season features performances of Dan's Lonesome Roads and Ramshackle Songs as well as the premiere of a newly commissioned work for extraordinary young violinist Emily Daggett Smith in April 2014.
Bridge Records has released the first full-length disc of Dan's music, featuring performances by members of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Horszowski Trio. Click here for more info. The disc has also been featured as Q2 Radio's Album of the Week. and NPR's Performance Today.
Plain Dealer music critic Don Rosenberg recently chose violist Melia Watras's recording of Dan's Hard-Knock Stomp for special mention as part of a WCPN program featuring favorite recordings by a panel of music professionals. Cultures in Harmony (a fantastic outreach organization that promotes cross-cultural engagement through music) recently presented a concerts in Karachi, Pakistan that featured Dan's Black Bend.
